About Us

Serving the metro since 1975

We work to preserve and improve water resources and related ecosystems in the eastern Twin Cities metropolitan area. Partnering with the 12 cities in our district, we manage about 65 square miles that eventually drain into the Mississippi River, including 20 lakes, five streams and over 1,000 wetlands.

Featured Project

Keller Golf Course

Ecological restoration work on Maplewood’s Keller Golf Course earned Project of the Year honors from the Minnesota Association of Watershed Districts at the organization’s annual meeting this past December. Our 15-year partnership with Course Superintendent Paul Diegnau has created substantial urban wildlife habitat on this Ramsey County course while protecting the Phalen Chain of Lakes from runoff.

One of the unique traits of RWMWD staff is their contributions to cutting-edge research on ecological restoration in a watershed management context. Recently two Natural Resources department staff, Bill Bartodziej and Simba Blood, along with Keith Pilgrim from Barr Engineering, had an article on strategic aquatic plant harvesting published in Lakeline Magazine, a publication of the North American Lake Management Society. Staff findings have also been published in the Journal of Aquatic Plant Management, Ecological Restoration, Land and Water, and Global Change Biology. View this and other publications on our website (link in bio).

Salt won't melt ice when the pavement is below 15 degrees, but it will impair local waters. Try shoveling early and often, chipping the ice, or using grit or sand for traction instead! If you need to apply something else, use magnesium chloride or calcium chloride sparingly.

Watch where you shovel! Although rain gardens and infiltration basins may look like a natural choice for snow storage, it can lead to unintended damage. Plowed snow has sediments and deicers that can decrease drainage, breakdown soil structure, or negatively impact plants.

The Phalen Lake outlets and Keller Channel weirs are getting an upgrade. Weir heights will be automatically adjustable on both structures when the project is completed this spring. Find out the water storage benefits of this project and other information on our site https://buff.ly/3oI3xTO
